How to Win Grants & Influence Funders by Addressing Online Abuse

Applying for grants can be a grind. Universities, nonprofits and other victim-serving organizations know exactly what I’m talking about. It often involves a ton of work on tight deadlines and the outcome - receiving funds - is far from certain. In fact, according to FundingForGood.org, organizations submitting applications to a combination of existing and new funders should expect a success rate of between 50 and 60 percent.

Lately, we have been fielding requests from colleges and universities to support and inform their grant applications around digital safety. Given the transition to online learning by most schools, this makes a lot of sense. In an increasingly digital world, demonstrating a commitment to address online and tech-enabled abuse will help grant seekers stay competitive and stand out.  EndTAB wants to help streamline this process for any organization looking to support victims of online abuse.

We created free resources that organizations can plug into or adapt for their grant applications. These include draft grant language, eye catching statistics and staff training information.  Our goal is to enhance grant applications and even open up new opportunities with funders who are interested in addressing online abuse and digital safety.

Who should use these resources: Any organization seeking funding to address student/victim safety, gender-based violence, stalking, elder abuse, human trafficking, harassment or bullying. This includes universities, nonprofits, law enforcement agencies, the military, high schools, middle schools, courts, social services, healthcare organizations and others.

Why focus on online abuse and digital safety?  Students, victims and those seeking to harm them are flocking online in record numbers.  Not surprisingly, online abuse is spiking as a result and victim-serving organizations cannot address the needs of the populations they serve without also prioritizing digital safety.  Luckily, the path to becoming a tech-savvy organization has never been easier.

Addressing this critical need: EndTAB’s tailored curriculum is designed to empower attendees to identify, prevent, educate and address the myriad of ways students and victims experience harm online and via their devices. This is accomplished through a mix of knowledge and skill-building training courses and interactive resources.

Stand out: Every funder is aware of how the pandemic impact has pushed everyone online.  They, like everyone, are experiencing this new reality themselves.  On some level, funders likely are already expecting grant seekers to address digital safety.  If not, a section addressing online abuse will help an application stand out and educate the reader.  Either way, it will highlight a commitment to stay current and address emerging critical needs among victims and students.
